MagnaFlow Joins Forces with Veteran Overland
In honor of Veterans Day, MagnaFlow is partnering with Veteran Overland this year to promote and support their noble mission, which is “increasing resilience within the veteran community through the proven healing power of connection, the positive mental perspective of the outdoors, and the need for post-service skill building through overlanding.”
The mission is a personal one for co-founders Jeff McPike (ig: @pikeventure) and Will Hardison (ig: @notyourmomslx), who founded Veteran Overland together in 2016. Jeff is an 8-year U.S Army veteran that was sent to Iraq in 2003-2004 on a combat deployment and spent his time there behind a HMMWV-mounted .50 Cal on multi-day cross-country convoy missions. Upon returning, Jeff instructed deploying troops in convoy operations and co-founded a veteran support group for a Fortune 500 corporation, with a focus on helping vets transition into civilian careers. Will is nearing his 16th year of service in the National Guard. He served as an infantry platoon leader during his deployment to Afghanistan. Like Jeff, Will discovered the healing powers of overlanding upon his return to the States, which inspired him to want to share the experience with fellow veterans.
Jeff and Will consider the Mission of V/O to have four essential pillars of effort: resilience, overlanding, connection and the outdoors. Resilience, which psychologists define as being adaptable in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or significant sources of stress, is a key protective factor when it comes to preventing suicide. The necessity of resilience is what makes the other three pillars so vital, as some of the best ways to improve resilience include prioritizing relationships, joining a group, practicing mindfulness, avoiding negative outlets, helping others and maintaining a positive outlook.
Fortunately, overlanding is a pastime that checks all these boxes. The activity, which involves extended periods of camping and terrain traversal in the great outdoors using only the vehicle(s) and equipment brought along for the journey, dovetails perfectly into the skills, training and mindset that the U.S. military instills and values in its personnel. This strong foundation of expertise and capabilities makes an overland adventure a profoundly healing experience.
The training, skill-refreshing instruction, gear usage, common goal and connections made with fellow veterans along the journey help foster a sense of belonging, purpose and camaraderie in all participants. Such connections do more than just lift people’s spirits, they also save lives, which is why V/O takes interested veterans on numerous overland excursions every year. Being in the outdoors also provides myriad natural benefits to participants, including lower blood pressure and reduced stress, as well as improved mood and focus.
These overlanding trips can consist of a large vehicle convoy or even just a single rig, depending on what the veteran in question is most comfortable with. If they don’t have an overland-ready vehicle, the team at V/O is happy to meet that need with one of their own stalwart rigs. V/O’s next event is their Annual Veterans Day Campout and Run 2021 this weekend, November 12th-14th. Future trips include their Cold Hearts Snow Camp weekend in February 2022 and the Memorial Day Muster, which is their largest annual gathering.
